Terriers Roll to DH Sweep Over Colgate

BOSTON – Helped by two shutout pitching performances and strong day at the plate, the Boston University softball team rolled past Colgate in a home doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon.

Posting a combined 19-4 advantage in hits, the Terriers (21-10, 5-0 PL) extended their win streak to nine contests, as the Raiders fell to 10-21 and 0-2 in conference play. Junior Kasey Ricard (13-6) earned four strikeouts without allowing a walk in the 6-0 game one victory, and freshman Ava Johnson (3-1) recorded five strikeouts in an 11-0 (5) run-rule decision.

Offensively, sophomore Libby Walsh led BU batting a perfect 5-for-5 with three RBIs, a number matched by both junior Megan Coyle and sophomore Kyomi Apalit. Coyle went 2-for-5 to join Walsh in recording two doubles apiece. The two Terriers touched home plate three times each alongside sophomore Kylie Doherty, who is now owner for a team-high eight homers.

GAME 1: BU - 6, Colgate - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders threatened early with a one-out double in the first against Ricard, who kept the game scoreless with a pair of fly outs.
  • Sophomore Kylie Doherty led off the bottom half with a single and eventually scored on Walsh's two-out RBI single to right to grab the lead for good.
  • Junior Aimee Metz started the second with a double and scored on sophomore Kyomi Apalit's RBI sac fly to left.
  • With two outs, Doherty delivered her second hit of the game by launching a 3-2 pitch to center to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • After only managing a walk over the previous two innings, BU doubled its lead in the fifth with three runs off four hits, including back-to-back two-out RBI doubles from Coyle and Walsh that helped set up freshman Addie Lucier's RBI single.
  • Ricard retired the last 14 Raiders and earned two strikeouts in the seventh to claim the shutout victory.
GAME 2: BU - 11, Colgate - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Similar to the first game, Colgate had its best look at getting on the scoreboard in the first inning with a lead-off double and stolen base.
  • Johnson though responded with a strikeout and infield pop up before catching a quick liner in the circle.
  • After the Raiders quickly retired the side in the bottom of the first, the Terriers blew open the game in the second with nine runs off seven hits and two errors.
  • The Terriers scored five runs before Colgate recorded its first out of the inning, as Lucier, freshman Camryn Lyons and Apalit combined for four RBIs on three singles.
  • Coyle doubled to left center to plate two and scored her second run of the inning on Walsh's RBI single to left.
  • BU added two more runs in the fourth with Walsh scoring on senior Tyesha Williams' RBI grounder after her lead-off double and freshman Kieren McHugh delivering a pinch-hit double that led to another run scoring on Metz's RBI sac fly.
  • Johnson earned her second shutout of the game with a strikeout, line out and fly out to right.
UP NEXT
  • Trying to beat the weather, the teams will now conclude the series on Saturday (March 29) at 10 a.m.
