
Shannehan Named PL Rookie of the Year; Six Terriers Earn All-PL Accolades

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Freshman Timothy Shannehan was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year and was one of six Terriers to receive All-Patriot League accolades, the conference announced on Monday.
Shannehan becomes the second player in program history to be named Patriot League Rookie of the Year; Chris Gray earned the award in 2018. Shannehan also earned First Team All-Patriot League honors while five Terriers - seniors Will Barnes, Trey Brown and Jimmy O'Connell, junior Connor Kehm and freshman Andrew Pape - received second-team recognition.
One of just two Terrier freshmen to be named to the First Team All-Patriot League as a freshman, Shannehan was one of the best rookies not just in the conference but in the country. He leads all rookies with 54 points and is the only freshman in the country with at least 50 points. He is also one of just 19 players with 25+ goals and 25+ assists, as he enters the postseason with 28 goals and 26 assists.. Shannehan notched at least two points in 12 of his 14 starts at attack this year, including a season-best nine points on four goals and a career-high five assists at Bucknell on March 8. He totaled seven points on a career-high five goals and two assists against Air Force on Feb. 22, one of his five performances with five or more points.
Barnes earned a spot on the second team for a second straight year after another incredible campaign between the pipes. He ended the regular season ranked sixth in the country with a .598 save percentage and eighth in the NCAA with an 8.76 goals-against average. A five-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, Barnes averaged 12.43 saves per game, good for 14th in the nation and third in the conference. He made a career-best 23 saves in a 12-7 triumph over Lehigh on April 19 and made what was then a career-high 22 saves, including a fantastic stop in overtime, in the Terriers' 10-9 win at then-No. 2/3 Army West Point on March 22. Barnes shut out Holy Cross during his entire 45 minutes of work on March 29 thanks to 10 saves, one of his 11 efforts of 10 or more saves.
Brown secured his first All-PL honors thanks to a fantastic season at both LSM and at close defense. He enters the postseason with 28 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers in addition to scoring one goal. Brown has been a major part of the Terriers' success in the ride and the clear, helping BU finish the regular season with the fourth-ranked ride in the nation. Brown filled in admirably at close defense for five games while junior Matt Freeman was out with injury before returning to his spot as the Terriers' top LSM for the regular-season finale. One of Brown's finest efforts came in the Terriers' 10-9 win at then-No. 2/3 Army, as he helped hold First Team All-PL midfielder Evan Plunkett without a point.
Kehm, an Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-American, was one of the best close defenders in the country this season. He leads BU with a career-high 29 caused turnovers and a career-best 49 ground balls and enters the postseason ranked sixth in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (2.07) and total caused turnovers (29). Nobody among the top six in total caused turnovers has recorded more ground balls than Kehm this season, with Kehm collecting at least two ground balls in 13 of his 14 starts. He had a career-best seven ground balls in addition to three caused turnovers against then-No. 12 Duke on April 5 and twice set a career high with four caused turnovers, including this past Friday against Colgate to help BU clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
O'Connell was sensational in his first year as a starting attackman, leading BU in points (61) and assists (30) as the quarterback of the Terrier offense. He became the sixth Terrier in program history to record 60+ points in a single season thanks to a career-best eight points on five goals and a career-high five assists this past Friday against Colgate. O'Connell notched a point in all 14 starts and has a 15-game point streak dating back to last season. He was particularly good down the stretch, as he averaged 5.6 points per game in the final five contests of the season. O'Connell scored a career-high four goals on four different occasions and recorded at least two points in all but one contest. The Franklin Square, New York, native also notched at least one ground ball in each of the Terriers' final 13 games of the season.
Pape shined in his first season as a Terrier, making nine starts out of the midfield and emerging as one of the best young players in the conference. He enters the postseason with 15 goals and three assists for 18 points, which ranks fourth on the team. His best game was in the Terriers' 10-9 triumph at then-No. 2/3 Army West Point, as he scored a career-high four goals. Pape ended the year with two goals and one assist in each of the Terriers' final two games of the season, both victories that propelled BU to the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. pape notched a point in nine different games this season, scoring a goal in all nine of those contests.
