Carey Overtime Goal Sends Terriers Past No. 7/6 Northeastern, 2-1, in Women's Beanpot Semifinal
January 13, 2026 | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - In front of the largest women's hockey crowd in Walter Brown Arena history, senior captain Maeve Carey scored an overtime power-play goal to lift Boston University past No. 7 Northeastern, 2-1, on Tuesday evening in the semifinals of the 47th Dunkin' Women's Beanpot Tournament.
The teams traded goals just over six minutes apart in the opening period and remained in a 1-1 deadlock for over 52 minutes of play before Carey's heroics sent the Terriers to the title game for the third straight year.
A crowd of 2,281 watched Harvard top Boston College - also by a score of 2-1 - in the opening semifinal before the Terriers stretched their win streak to three games with the thrilling overtime triumph.
Freshman Lexie Bertelsen opened the scoring in the fifth minute of play before the Huskies tied it at the 10:32 mark of the first.
Carey buried an opportunity from the inner edge of the right circle with exactly two minutes left in overtime off assists from sisters Keira and Sydney Healey.
Junior Mari Pietersen turned in an impressive 35-save performance, stopping the last 28 shots she faced.
BU improves to 7-11-3 on the year while the Huskies fall to 16-6-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU found itself shorthanded just 49 seconds into the contest on an interference call but Pietersen and the penalty kill was up to the early challenge.
- The Terriers' third forward line teamed up to produce the game's first goal as junior Greta Henderson got a puck in deep that deflected off NU netminder Lisa Jönsson and right to Bertlesen, who put it on goal and then tucked in the rebound with a backhand inside the right post just 4:29 into the first.
- Northeastern got an equalizer when a pass from the right corner went off a BU defender and directly to the stick of Lily Shannon in the low slot, where she snuck the puck past Pietersen to make it 1-1 with 9:28 remaining in the first.
- The teams traded power-play chances later in the first that overlapped by 13 seconds but neither team was able to take a lead into the first intermission.
- The second period was a back-and-forth affair with great chances that tested both goaltenders.
- BU drew an interference call on NU late in the second but could not take advantage of the power-play opportunity, which extended into the opening moments of the third.
- The game was played at even strength the rest of regulation despite several patches of physical play on both ends.
- Sydney Healey drew the penalty in overtime when her breakaway chance was impeded by a NU slash.
- Carey collected a pass at the top of the zone before skating in and snapping the winner to the back of the net.

- Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play in regulation before the decisive NU penalty in overtime.
