Harold G. Carlson

Sport: Multiple
Year Graduated: 1926
Year Inducted: 1959

Harold "Spike" Carlson was one of the first members inducted into the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a three sport star, captaining the football, baseball and boxing teams.

Carlson had already lived quite a life before coming to Boston University in the fall of 1922. He served in the Army during World War I from 1917-1919 and was one of the first servicemen to report overseas. After parting with the Army, he spent the next three years in the business world before enrolling in the college of business administration and embarking on his football career.

He started in the backfield on a team that thrust the Terriers into national recognition when they tied a previously unbeaten and untied Holy Cross team that was ranked in the top 6 in the East. B.U. marched out to Worcester and came away with a very satisfying 7-7 tie.

Carlson's speed in the backfield translated well to baseball. He was a fleet of foot outfielder with some pop in his bat, especially during the 'dead ball era' of baseball.

As a pugilist, Carlson fought in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions and held the New England Championship in both classes.
