Terriers Fall to Fairfield, 5-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Boston University women's soccer team (1-2-0) dropped a 5-2 decision to Fairfield (2-1-0) on Thursday evening at Lessing Field.
The first half was quick paced with BU leading in shots by one in the first 45 minutes. In a spur of possession by the Terriers, BU took a 1-0 lead at the 20th minute which it held through the first half.
Fairfield evened the score at the 66th minute after a corner kick before taking a 2-1 lead at the 71st minute. The Terriers evened the score two minutes later, but Fairfield answered to lead 3-2 at the 77th minute. The Stags tacked on another goal with 10 minutes to play and the Terriers did not close the gap as BU fell, 4-2.
Senior Olivia Avellar scored BU's goal, which was her first of the season. Senior Samantha Aronson and junior Jaiden Schultz earned assists on Avellar's goal. Junior Bridget Carr made six saves in net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fairfield was quick to charge the BU net after first kick, but Carr was alert, making a save just 43 seconds into the game.
- Aronson attempted BU's first shot of the day at the sixth minute which went wide.
- BU found the back of the net at the 9' mark but the goal was called offside and the goal was reversed.
- Carr made a stop in net moments later to keep the game scoreless.
- Momentum from BU saw Aronson pass to Schultz through two Fairfield defenders as she collected the ball and found Avellar.
- Avellar then took a right-footed long shot which found the top left corner of the net to give BU a 1-0 lead at the 20th minute.
- BU successfully defended another Fairfield corner at the 33rd minute as Carr made her fifth save of the game on the header attempt.
- Fairfield nearly evened the score at the 41st minute with a long shot that went just over the crossbar.
- The Terriers held a 1-0 lead headed into the half.
- BU took a free kick at the 48' mark but the attempt was cleared by Fairfield.
- The Terriers cleared a cross by Fairfield at the 62' mark and forced a corner, which they also successfully cleared after a header attempt by the Stags.
- Fairfield took its fourth corner of the game at the 66th minute and, following multiple short passes in the box, found the back of the net to tie the game at one goal apiece.
- The Stags were awarded a free kick at the 71st minute and after the ball was sent out of the box, they scored on a long shot to take a 2-1 lead.
- BU responded just over two minutes later when a Fairfield deflection found Kennedy, whose shot slid in at the left post to tie the game 2-2.
- Fairfield regained the lead at the 77th minute and, after video review, the goal was confirmed.
- The Stags scored again at the 80th minute to take a 4-2 lead.
- After a video review, BU was called for a hand ball in the box and Fairfield was rewarded a penalty kick at the 87th minute.
- The Stags scored on the set piece and fended off the Terriers through the remaining minutes to bring the final score to Fairfield 5, BU 2.

- BU took five corners while Fairfield took four.
- The Stags narrowly led in shots, 14 to 13.
- Both teams had four fouls.
- Fairfield changed its goalkeeper at the half with the tandem making a combined five saves.
GAME NOTES
- Sophomore Avery Hoff made her first collegiate start.
- This was Carr's second start of the season.
- Carr had more saves in the first half (six) than she had in a full game in 2025.
- Aronson's assist was her first since 2024 when she recorded one against Texas in the NCAA Tournament.
