In the first quarter of his first game as the Terriers' starting quarterback, Robert Dougherty showed he was going to be someone special. By the last quarter of his final game, he showed just how special he was.
When the 1993 season dawned, no one knew about this 5-9, 170-pounder from Visalia, CA, who had spent his first two years at the College of the Sequoias.
It all changed by the end of the first quarter of that Maine game, as Robert completed 13-of-15 passes for 201 yards, and 2 TDs, while he ran the ball 3 times for 19 yards and another 2 TDs. The Terriers led 35-0 and there were still 45 minutes more of football to play.
Each successive week, he thrilled fans with his ability to scramble out of certain sacks as he was as adroit running and throwing the ball.
The Terriers finished the regular-season with an 11-0 record, the program's first undefeated-untied season in history. They went on to the NCAA Division 1-AA playoffs where they defeated Northern Iowa in one of the most exciting games ever played at Nickerson Field before losing at Idaho the following week. Robert completed 212-of-386 passes for 2875 yards and 18 TDs, while he rushed for 11 more TDs. He was the East's, New England's, and Yankee Conference's Player of the Year.
The following season he helped guide the Terriers to a 9-3 record, including a berth in the Division 1-AA playoffs. Robert completed 262-of 440 passes for 3596 yards and 24 TDs. He was voted Third Team All-American and was fourth in the balloting for the Division 1-AA Player of the Year.
"He had all the intangibles you look for in a quarterback," said his head coach Dan Allen. "He had instinct, athleticism, arm strength, and mobility. He also had outstanding leadership qualities which he showed from the moment he was on campus."
