Charles Lindberg Hanson was born on the same day that Charles
Lindberg touched down in France after making his historic
trans-Atlantic solo flight. His parents were so impressed
that they named their son after the international hero.
Although Lindy Hanson did not achieve the notoriety of his
namesake, he did achieve athletic prominence at Abington (MA)
High School and later at Boston University. At Abington, where
he played under Hall of Famer Herb Semino, Lindy was one of
the few football players to gain unanimous All-Scholastic
honors, as well as honors in baseball and basketball.
A halfback for the Terriers during Buff Donelli's era of
big time football, Lindy was an outstanding halfback on offense
and equally impressive as a defensive back. In 1950 he led
the team in scoring with 30 points against a schedule that
included the likes of Dusquesne, St. Bonaventure, Miami, Syracuse,
William & Mary, Idaho, and the College of the Pacific.
And, in 1951 he scored the winning touchdown against C.O.P.
to give the Terriers one of the biggest upsets in the country.
Lindy captained the team in 1952, earning All-East and All-New
England honors.
