While most athletic figures specialize in the competitive
or instructional realms of a chosen sport, Wilhelmina "Billee"
McFee's extensive athletic career is highlighted by success
at the competitive, coaching, and officiating levels of eleven
sports. A 1948 graduate of Sargent College, McFee's education
came at a time when women were prohibited from competing at
the intercollegiate athletics. However, her excellence at
the interclass level in a variety of sports eventually gained
sufficient recognition to earn selection on the United State's
Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams, as well as the Massachusetts
State badminton team.
At the same time, she took an interest in the officiating
aspect of the various sports in which she was involved, and
soon earned her official's ratings as a USFHA Field Hockey
Sectional Official, a National Basketball Official, and a
USLTA National Tennis Umpire.
McFee enjoyed similar success in the classroom, and, following
her days at Sargent College, would later embark on a successful
legal career.
Upon graduation in May of 1948, McFee put her numerous athletic
achievements and involvement to practical use by instructing
and coaching at several Massachusetts colleges and universities.
She taught field hockey, lacrosse, riding, and tennis at Mt.
Holyoke, Smith, Wellesley, and Boston University, while coaching
and officiating basketball and field hockey.
Overall, McFee's teaching, coaching and officiating career
encompassed eleven sports -- badminton, basketball, fencing,
field hockey, gold, lacrosse, riding, skiing, softball, swimming,
squash, tennis, and volleyball -- at seven colleges and universities.
