One of the many talented athletes to play football at Boston
University during the 10-year coaching reign of Buff Donelli,
guard Lou Salvati was the second Cranston, RI, native to become
a Hall of Famer within the past two years at the time of induction;
the late Bob Capuano was inducted posthumously the year before.
Captain of the 1949 Terriers, Lou led his team to a six-game
winning streak which included victories over such schools
as Syracuse and West Virginia. He had joined the starting
eleven as a sophomore and was voted that year to the All-New
England second team. The next year he made the first team,
and in 1949 he was named All-East as well, in addition to
receiving honorable mention on several All-America teams.
Despite opportunities to play professional football, Lou decided
on his family's construction business, where he was a vice
president at the time of induction. When he wasn't putting
up buildings, he contributed his coaching ability to the Cranston
League for Cranston's Future, which promoted participation
in several sports for some 2,000 youngsters.
