Terrier Twelve - #5: Field Hockey Claims Regular-Season PL Title, Posts Nation's Top GAA

August 4, 2017

For the 10th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 5 in this year's Terrier 12 is the field hockey team earning the Patriot League regular-season title while posting the lowest goals-against average in the nation.

The Terriers kicked off their 2016 season with seven straight wins, resulting in the best start in program history. After claiming the title at the season-opening Wildcat Classic with wins over No. 16 Northwestern and host UNH, BU embarked on a perfect 5-0 homestand to continue to the record start. One of the highlights of the season came on Oct. 16 when senior Madeline McClain scored the game's lone goal in overtime to lift the Terriers past rival Boston College.

A 2-1 win over American in the regular-season finale clinched the Patriot League regular-season title for the second consecutive year. Looking for a PL Championship three-peat, the Terriers came up just short in a rematch with the Eagles in the title game at New Balance Field and came up just short of an NCAA at-large berth.

The team went on to finish with 13 victories and an RPI of 15. Five of the Terriers' six losses were by a single goal with one of those decided in a shootout.

Sally Starr was named Patriot League Coach of the Year while senior captains Hester van der Laan and Ellie Landsman were named the league's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Van der Laan went on to earn a spot on the NFHCA All-America Second Team. Led by senior goalkeeper Cammy Jansen, the BU defense posted a 1.18 goals-against average, which was the best among all 79 Division I squads.

In all, five BU seniors collected All-Patriot League honors with Taylor Blood joining Van der Laan, Landsman and Jensen on the first team and Amanda Cassera collecting second-team accolades. Van der Laan and Landman were selected to the NFHCA All-Region First Team and Blood earned a spot on the second team.
