In a long list of Boston University hockey greats, Mike Hyndman stands out as one of the most versatile performers, leading the nation in scoring as a forward, and earning First Team All-America status as a defenseman.
Nicknamed the "Cannon," Hyndman blasted the opposition for 171 points on 52 goals and 119 assists, and propelled the Terriers to a three-year overall mark of 59-26-3.
He began his playing days on defense, but his offensive exploits carried him to the number one line, where he registered at least one point in 27 of the team's 32 games. Some of his memorable offensive efforts during the 1967-68 season include a hat trick against Merrimack, a five-point evening at Dartmouth and a six-point outing in the regular season finale against Providence. Selected as the New England Sophomore of the year, he concluded the campaign as the nation's leading scorer with 23 goals and 44 assists, and sparked the Terriers to a 20-9-3 mark.
The following season, he again led the club offensively with 18 goals and 34 assists for 52 points. He tallied hat tricks against New Brunswick in the season opener and against BC in the opening round of the Beanpot. During the year, he earned a pair of ECAC weekly awards, and, for the second consecutive season, he was a Second Team All-ECAC selection.
During his senior year, he moved back to the point, solidifying the team's defense while again leading the club offensively with 52 points, and earning First Team All-America recognition for his outstanding two-way hockey. In addition, he was named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team and earned Beanpot MVP recognition after playing 45 minutes and tallying three assists in the club's come-from-behind 5-4 win over Boston College in the finals. In addition, he was selected as the team's MVP.
Hyndman led the Terriers to the ECAC Tournament all three years and two Beanpot titles.
