Men's Soccer Team Opens Conference Schedule With Tie
October 1, 1999 | Men's Soccer
The Terrier men's soccer team opened its quest for the America East regular-season title on Friday night (October 1st), and the result was pretty much what has been the story for the team this year an overtime tie, as B.U. battled New Hampshire to a 2-2 double overtime tie at Nickerson Field.
It marked the sixth time in nine games this year that B.U. has played an overtime game, and they are now 1-1-4 in those decisions.
What made the tie against New Hampshire so frustrating is the Terriers led 2-0 with less than 18 minutes to go in regulation. However, the Wildcats battled back and scored a pair of goals within a 2:02 mark to account for the final scoring.
B.U. jumped to a 1-0 lead at 8:09 of the game on the eighth goal of the year by junior Kirk Miller (Minnetonka, MN). He was set up by junior Frank Vigliotti (Branford, CT), who centered the ball to Miller who scored from 20 yards out. Sophomore Eric Manfoumbi (Longueuil, QUE) also had an assist.
Vigliotti then scored at the 72:56 mark from six yards out. Senior Eric Westgate (Malvern, PA) and junior Matt McManus (Holbrook, MA) both earned assists.
At that point, it appeared the Terriers, who were picked to win the America East title in the pre-season poll of the 10 league coaches, were well on their way to opening their league schedule on a successful note.
However, the Wildcats scored their first goal at 73:39 on the 11th goal of the year by Adam Purcell. Only a junior, Purcell entered the game ninth in Division 1 in goals with an average of 1.25 goals a game and 10th in scoring with 2.75 points per game. Purcell then tied the game just 2:02 later and that's the way it remained for the rest of regulation and through 30 minutes of overtime.
The Terriers had two excellent scoring chances in OT. Sigurd Dalen had the first opportunity at 8:10 of the first overtime, but UNH goalie Mitch Osman made the save.
Then, Osman denied Chris Bone in the opening minutes of the second overtime.
