Men's Basketball Falls to Maine

BOSTON, MA (Dec. 9) -- Nate Fox (Plainville, IL) scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds as the Maine Black Bears (5-1,1-0) defeated Boston University (1-6,0-1) in the America East opener for both teams tonight before 684 on 'The Roof'.
The win was Maine's fifth straight after dropping their season-opener to Bucknell on November 19.
BU jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with 15:25 to play in the first half, but Maine came back with a 11-4 run to cut the Terriers' lead to three at 15-12.
Senior guard Mike Costello (Belmont, MA) hit a three-pointer with 7:30 remaining to give BU a 27-22 lead. Maine tied the game, 27-27,on a jumper by Andy Bedard (Rumford, Maine) - 12 first half points.
Freshman forward Jacob Kudlacz (Glen Cove, NY) connected on a jumper with 5:14 to play in the first half to tie the game for the last time at 29-29.
Maine continued its 19-2 run en route to a 41-29 halftime lead.
In the final 7:30 of the first half, BU shot one for 10, while the Black Bears converted six of nine shots.
The Terriers went seven minutes and 26 second without scoring from 5:14 left in the first half to senior center Jean Avebe's (Yaounde, Cameroon) jumper at 17:48 of the second half.
BU could get no closer than ,45-36 with 16:49 to play.
Maine extended its lead to 18 at 65-47 with 7:11 to play.
At that point, freshman guard Matt Turner (West Haven, CT), who led the Terriers with 12 points, stole the ball and drove the length of the court and dunked it over a Maine defender.
Again though, the Terriers could not score in the final six minutes in losing their sixth game in seven outings.
Kudlacz was BU's other double figure scorer chipping in with a career-high 10 points on four-of-seven shooting.
Costelllo led the Terriers in rebounds for the second straight game with six.
Maine shot 54.2 % in the second half and 52.8 % for the game (28-of-53).
BU head coach Dennis Wolff tied Matt Zunic, who coached from 1952-59, as the program's all-time leader in games coached with 154.
The Terriers connected on 45.5 % of their field goal attempts on the night, (20-44). BU's 44 field goal attempts were a season low.
Boston University hosts New Hampshire (1-5, 0-1) on Saturday, December 11 at 7 p.m. in the Terriers' last game before finals begin.
