Terriers Top Maine, Remain Perfect in America East

ORONO, Maine Junior co-captain Stijn Dhondt (Borem, Belgium) and freshman center Ryan Butt (Lancaster, PA) each scored 18 points as the Boston University mens basketball team continued its early season success with a 79-67 win over Maine on Tuesday (Dec. 12).
Freshman forward Jason Grochowalski (Shrewsbury, MA) added 15 points and sophomore co-captain Billy Collins continued to improve coming off a stress fracture in his ankle, scoring 10, to round out the Terriers in double figures.
With the victory, B.U. is now 5-2, and more importantly, 2-0 in the America East Conference. Maine falls to 5-3, 1-2.
Butt played a key role in the Terrier victory, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field, and 4-of-4 from the line while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
The team shot 48 percent for the game, 56 percent in the second half. The Terriers won the game at the free throw line, converting 18-of-22 shots from the charity stripe in the second half, 22-for-26 for the game.
Maine, which led 35-30 at the half, shot 57 percent in the opening stanza and over 53 percent for the game, but it was the Terriers trips to the line that sealed the victory.
B.U. also did a solid job in the turnover department, committing only 10 while forcing 18. The Terriers outscored the Black Bears in points off turnovers, 24-11.
B.U. now returns to Boston for its first home game of the season on Thursday, December 14 to face UMass at Walter Brown Arena at 7 p.m.
