KINGSTON, R.I. (September 10) -- The Terriers' men's soccer team saw its record slip to 1-2-0 with a 1-0 overtime loss at the University of Rhode Island. It marked the third time this year B.U. was involved in an overtime decision. They opened the season with a 2-1 win against Florida International in the opening round of the Florida International Tournament. Then, in the title game, they lost to Florida Atlantic, 3-2, in double overtime.
This marks the first time in the 50-year history of men's soccer at B.U. that the Terriers have opened their season with three overtime games.
In their most recent overtime match, the Terriers bowed to Rhode Island, as B.U. had only two shots at net. Chris Bone (Newcastle, England) had one, while Tony Piperno (Warrington, PA) had the other.
The Rams managed nine shots on Terrier freshman goalie Matt Smith (Lanchester, England), who gave up the winning goal at the 102:24 mark on a header by Rhode Island's Steve Demoura. In all, Smith, who is now 1-1-0 for the season, had three saves.
The Terriers played the game without All-American midfielder Sigurd Dalen (Oslo, Norway), who suffered a sprained ankle against Florida Atlantic.
