September 6, 1999 | Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 sudden-death second-overtime decision to Florida Atlantic University on Sunday (September 5th) in the title game of the Golden Panther Classic. Ironically, on Saturday, in the first round of the tournament, the Terriers (1-1-0) took advantage of sudden-death to defeat tournament-host Florida International, 2-1.
It appeared the Terriers would come away with the tournament title on Sunday when All-American Sigurd Dalen staked B.U. to a 2-1 lead at the 84:10 mark.
However, the Owls scored the equalizer at the 87:43 juncture to set the stage for overtime. Neither team scored in the first 15 minutes of OT, and the game went into the second extra session.
Then, at 105:24, Stephan Johannson scored his second goal of the game to lift Florida Atlantic to the title.
Johannson was named the offensive MVP of the tournament, while the Terriers' Bryan Devenney was the defensive MVP.
In addition to Dalen, the other Terrier goal scorer against Florida Atlantic was Kirk Miller, who tallied his first career goal for the Terriers at 56:06. Miller transferred to B.U. after a successful two-year career at the University of Maryland. Dalen earned an assist on the Miller goal.
Keith Poole played the entire game in net for the Terriers and was charged with the loss.
