Men's Soccer Team Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to Drexel
October 1, 2000 | Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team suffered one of its most heartbreaking losses of the season on Oct. 1 as it dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to visiting Drexel in America East action.
Leading 1-0 with just 22 seconds to play in regulation, the Terriers gave up the tying goal in the closing minute of regulation and the game-winning goal just 3:02 into the first overtime period.
The loss dropped the Terriers' overall record to 4-4-2 while they are 0-1-1 in the league.
Senior Mark Lowyns had staked the Terriers to a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal of the season at 47:44. B.U. senior co-captain Kirk Miller set up the goal when he took a shot that was blocked in front by a Drexel player. It came out to B.U. sophomore Marcus Raiseman, who followed it up with a shot that was saved by Drexel goalkeeper Mike Haberman. Lowyns got the rebound, and he drilled it past Haberman's left side.
It appeared that would be enough for the Terriers to notch their first conference win of the season.
In fact, with just 30 seconds to play, the Terriers had a throw in from deep inside their own territory. They managed to get the ball out of danger and were crossing the center of the field when Drexel forced a turnover. The Dragons took the ball downfield where Jim Costello passed the ball to Jeff Bricker. The Drexel senior waited until he got inside the box before he fired the ball past Terrier keeper Mike Cardenas for the equalizer.
That set the stage for Pittaoulis' game-winner just 3:58 into the first overtime.
Drexel enjoyed the territorial advantage in the first half, outshooting the Terriers, 9-5 and holding the edge in corner kicks, 3-0. The Dragons also outshot B.U. in the second half, 12-8, and had the only shot in overtime. In corner kicks, Drexel had a 2-1 edge in the second half.
Haberman earned the win with four saves, while Cardenas had five for the Terriers.
