Men's Soccer Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive
October 27, 2000 | Men's Soccer
The Terrier men's soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over the University of Delaware on Oct. 27 to keep its hopes for an America East playoff bid alive.
It was the third straight conference win for the Terriers, who are now 4-3-1 with one league game left to playSunday (October 29th) at Towson University. Their record gives them 13 points, which are three points behind Hofstra. The Pride, which currently is in fourth place and holds the last playoff spot, is 5-2-1 in the league for 16 points. Drexel is in fifth place, just ahead of the Terriers, with a 5-3-0 record and 15 points.
B.U., which is 8-6-2 overall, must defeat the Tigers and hope for a couple of other scenarios to take place. First, Drexel must lose to Maine, which is 0-7-1 in the league, and, second, Hofstra must lose to New Hampshire, with is 3-5-0 in the league. Both those games will be played on Oct. 29.
Had the Terriers not defeated Delaware, all the above would have been academic.
The first half was lackluster on both sides, as B.U. had six shots and did not score. Fortunately, Delaware, which had five shots, also was held scoreless.
In the second half, Terrier senior co-captain Kirk Miller (Minnetonka, MN) opened the scoring on an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute.
Delaware came back to tie the game in the 57th minute on a goal by Todd Everett.
Then, with less than eight minutes to play, freshman Andy Dorman (Flintshire Wales, UK), who was the America East Rookie of the Week last week, scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a direct kick from 20 yards out.
Freshman Bjorn Jacobson (Pacific Palisades, CA) scored an insurance goal with just 37 seconds to play in regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England) made four saves to post his third straight win for the Terriers.
