Terriers Bow To Towson In Men's Soccer Finale
October 29, 2000 | Men's Soccer
The B.U. men's soccer team's valiant late-season effort to qualify for the America East post-season tournament came to an end on Oct. 29 as they bowed to host Towson, 2-1.
The Terrier., who only two weeks ago was 1-3-1 in the league and saw its hopes for qualifying for the tournament very dim, had won three straight to improve to 4-3-1. Entering the final game of the season, the Terriers still had hopes of making the tournament.
B.U. needed to beat Towson and hope that Drexel and Hofstra lose to Maine and New Hampshire, respectively.
None of the three occurred.
Drexel blanked Maine, 3-0. Hofstra shut out New Hampshire, 1-0. Finally, the Terriers lost to Towson.
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers scored a pair of unanswered goals to lead 2-0 at the 59:46 mark.
Todd Lauber scored the first goal when he received a pass from Randy Tolson. His shot just went by the leap of Terrier sophomore goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England).
Towson increased its lead to 2-0 eight minutes later when Alfonso DeMares scored off a Lauber deflection.
The Terriers got on the scoreboard four minutes later when junior Eric Manfoumbi (Longueuil, Quebec, Canada) scored off a re-start by senior Kirk Miller (Minnetonka, MN) B.U. put on some late scoring threats, but could not come up with the equalizer and finished the season with an 8-7-2 record overall and a 4-4-1 mark in the league.
In the America East post-season tournament, Northeastern, which blanked Delaware, 4-0, in the regular-season finale, will receive the top seed as the regular-season champion. Vermont finished second, while Towson was third, and Hofstra was fourth.
These four will advance to next weekend's tournament.
