Butt's 31 Points Can't Overcome Nectars
November 11, 2000 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward/center Ryan Butt scored 31 points on 12-for-19 shooting, but it wasn't enough to lift the Boston University men's basketball team as it fell to the Nantucket Nectars Naturals, 93-84 in an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 11 at "The Roof."
Sophomore Paul Seymour added 24 points for the Terriers, which finished up their exhibition schedule at 1-1. B.U. defeated the Citizens Bank All-Stars, 86-71 on November 3.
The Nantucket Nectars jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead to start the game after a pair of Tim Fudd free-throws. Fudd finished with 24 points for the Naturals.
Freshman Jason Grochowalski gave the Terriers their first lead since the opening basket with 10:13 left in the half with a pair of free throws to put B.U. up, 16-15.
The lead was short-lived however and the Naturals broke out to a 12-point lead at the half, 46-34. B.U. shot 38 percent from the field in the opening half on 13-for-34 shooting. The Nantucket Nectars shot 47 percent on 16-for-34 shooting. The Naturals went to the line 11 times, hitting nine free throws as opposed to the Terriers, who were 3-for-5.
The Terriers continued to try and find a rhythm in the second half, as the Naturals built a 22-point lead after Matt Carlin made a layup for a 76-54 advantage. From there, the Terriers began to slowly whittle away the lead.
Freshman Kevin Fitzgerald, who scored 11 points with five rebounds and four assists, made a layup with 3:10 to go cut the deficit to 82-68.
After a Fitzgerald steal, freshman Derrick Breland was able to cut the lead to 10, 86-76 with a layup with 1:36 to go. Fitzgerald was able to get the lead down to 88-80 with a layup with 38 seconds to go, but that's as close as the Terriers could get.
B.U. shot 44 percent from the field for the game on 31-for-71 shooting. The Naturals shot 47 percent, 28-for-60. Each team had 40 rebounds apiece.
The Terriers will kick off the 2000-2001 season on Friday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to St. Peter's.
