Men's Soccer Blanks Dartmouth In Classic Opener
September 16, 2000 | Men's Soccer
Senior co-captain Chris Bone had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Michael Cardenas posted his second straight shutout to help lead the Terrier men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over host Dartmouth in the opener of the Kappa/Hypertherm Dartmouth Men's Soccer Classic on Saturday (September 16th).
On Sunday, B.U. will meet Harvard, which lost to Stanford, 2-0, in the other opener of the Classic. The victory was the second straight for the Terriers, who are now 3-2 this season.
While Bone emerged as the team's top scorer with three points in the game, it was a pair of freshmen who accounted for the Terriers' first two goals.
First-year player Andrew Dorman opened the scoring at 8:46 when he collected a cross from senior Mark Lowyns and beat Dartmouth goalie Ben Gebre-Medhin.
Freshman Alan McNamara increased the Terriers' lead to 2-0 at 21:51 with assists to another freshman, Karl Ruegemer and Bone as B.U. took a 2-0 lead into the half.
Each team had five shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, while the Big Green held a slight edge in corner kicks, 1-0.
Dartmouth put the pressure on in the second half but could not get the ball past Cardenas.
In the final 45 minutes, Dartmouth outshot the Terriers, 7-2, and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Cardenas, who also earned credit for the 1-0 win over UMass on Monday night (September 11th), turned away all seven shots.
The only goal came at the 73:21 mark when Bone scored on a penalty kick.
It was the fourth penalty kick this season for the Terriers, the first three of which were scored by Kirk Miller.
While Miller did not get the penalty kick against Dartmouth, he figured in the call as the referee deemed Miller was interfered with when he had a break away. When Gebre-Medhin came out to challenge Miller, he was interfered with resulting in the penalty shot.
