Junior Joachim Kaland and senior Kirk Miller each second second-half goals to help power the Terrier men's soccer team to a 2-2 double overtime tie against Harvard in the second game of the Kappa/Hypertherm Dartmouth Men's Soccer Classic on Sunday (September 17th).
B.U. opened the Classic on Saturday (September 16th) with a 3-0 blanking of host Dartmouth.
With the tie against Harvard, the Terriers are 3-2-1 for the season.
This was the third time this year that B.U. was involved in double overtime match, and they are now 1-1-1 with a 3-2 win over Syracuse and a 4-3 loss to Boston College prior to the Harvard match.
Harvard, which is now 1-1-1 this season, got on the scoreboard just 54 seconds into the match when Mike Cornish drilled a shot by Terrier goalkeeper Michael Cardenas. The Crimson increased its lead to 2-0 at 14:21 when Ladd Fritz converted on a cross and feed from Wells Mangrum and Ryan Kelley.
It was a frustrating first half for the Terriers, who outshot Harvard, 8-6, and had the edge in corner kicks, 3-1.
It was a different story in the second half when the Crimson held the advantage in the statistics, outshooting B.U, 12-5, and enjoying a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
However, in the only statistic that really matters, B.U. outscored Harvard, 2-0, as the score ended in the 2-2 tie.
Kaland got the Terriers on the scoreboard just 1:10 in the half when he tallied with the assist to Karl Ruegemer.
Then, just 5:05 later, at the 51:15 mark, Miller knotted the score when his shot got past Harvard keeper Dan Mejias. EA Carr earned the assist.
The score remained that way for the final 38:45 of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime. Kaland and Miller were named to the All-Tournament Team on the strength of their performance against Harvard, while senior Chris Bone was named to the All-Tourney Team because of his goal and assist against Dartmouth on Saturday (September 16h).
In Sunday's other Classic game, Stanford shut out Dartmouth, 6-0, to finish the Classic with a 2-0 record and the tournament title.
