OMAHA, Neb. (Sept. 22) - The third-ranked Creighton Bluejays (6-0-0) experienced deja vu against Boston University (3-3-1) Sept. 22 in game two of the Ameritas Classic, as neither team was able to put the ball into its own goal. The Bluejays pulled out a victory, however, as Boston knocked the ball into its own goal at 62:17. CU's Peter Henning (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) played a ball in from midfield when a Terrier defender who was attempting to head the ball deflected it past his own keeper.
Almost one year ago to the day (Sept. 19, 1999), Boston battled Creighton to a 0-0 overtime tie in Boston, Mass. The Bluejays were ranked No. 1 then, and moved to No. 3 after the tie.
"I think our guys played with great energy -- their best game of the year," Creighton head coach Bret Simon said. "I'm very pleased with the maturity and patience our guys showed, not allowing for a breakdown."
Creighton outshot Boston, 11-3, holding a 3-1 shots on goal edge. The Bluejays also held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks. BU goalkeeper Duncan Kirkpatrick recorded two saves, while Mike Gabb (Omaha, Neb./Burke) had grabbed one for CU. The 1-0 win was Gabb's second career shutout. (His first was a 2-0 win over 12th-ranked Washington on Sept. 2.)
Earlier in the evening, 18th-ranked Marquette (6-0-1) defeated Drake (3-4-0) by a score of 3-2 in game one of the Ameritas Classic. The Classic continues on Sunday, when Drake faces Boston at noon and Creighton faces No. 18 Marquette at 2:30 p.m.
