Soules Leads Women's Past Maine, 4-0
September 30, 2000 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON (Sept. 30) - Junior forward Nicole Soules (Springfield, VA) had the first two-goal game of her collegiate career to lead the Boston University women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over America East rival Maine on Sept. 30. With the win, B.U. moves to 6-4-0 on the season, 4-0-0 in the America East. Maine falls to 5-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 in the conference.
After a slow start to the game with a lot of midfield play, Sophomore midfielder Allison Merkle got the Terriers on the board, rifling a shot from 20 yards out into the top corner past Maine goalkeeper Naomi Welsh for a 1-0 lead at 22:21. Ten minutes later, Senior forward Deidre Enos (Milton, MA) sent a nice ball to Soules on the right side, who slipped a shot under Welsh for a 2-0 lead.
For Enos, it was her 97th career point, three shy of 100. Enos has now played 72 games for the Terriers, starting all but one.
Junior back Amy Coccaro (Westfield, NJ) scored her first collegiate goal two minutes later, blasting home from 17 yards out a cleared corner kick attempt by Teresa Petrucelli (Flushing, NY). The Terriers made it three goals in under six minutes when Soules, the team's second-leading scorer last season, scored her second of the game at 37:15. "We made the most of our finishing chances," said head coach Nancy Feldman. "Nicole was one of our best players on the field today and she's been one of the most consistent players we've had this year." The Terriers controlled play into the second half, and didn't surrender a shot on goal until late in the game. Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Baalman (Englewood, CO), who replaced starter Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY) recorded the Terriers lone save on the combined shutout. "Right now we're on our way to making one of our goals, which is to get to the conference tournament," said Feldman. "Being 4-0 in the conference is huge. We won two on the road which is huge, and we have to win here, because you can't win the conference tournament unless you get there, so these wins are important."
