The Terrier women's soccer team had its four-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday (October 17th) when it dropped a 5-1 decision to host Harvard. With the loss, the Terriers slipped to 8-5-1 overall, while the nation's 10th-ranked Crimson improved to 8-1-0.
En route to consecutive wins over Towson, Delaware, Dartmouth, and Maine, B.U. had outscored its opponents by an 8-2 margin. However, the Terriers could not keep the Crimson attack at bay, as Harvard scored three times in the first half to take a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Beth Totman opened the scoring for the winners just 2:57 into the game when she took a pass from Katie Westfall and beat Terrier sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY). C
The Crimson added two more goals in the half. Joey Yenne scored the first at 28:15, while Orly Ripmaster added the second at 37:34. The Terriers finally got on the scoreboard in the 54th minute when sophomore Rebecca Beyer (Shawnee, KS) sent a long cross to the right side where junior Allison Merkle (Baltimore, MD) fired the ball past Harvard keeper Cheryl Gunther.
The goal cut the Terrier deficit to 3-1.
However, the Crimson responded with two goals within a minute of each other to put the game out of reach. Caitlin Costello scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year at 62:11, while Colleen Moore closed out the scoring at 63:14.
Harvard outshot the Terriers, 22-8.
Clinton had four saves in the B.U. goal, while Gunther and Robyn Scatena combined for three saves. Gunther played 73:49, had two saves, and allowed the B.U. goal, while Scatena played the final 16:11 and had one save.
The Terriers will be in action next on Sunday (October 21st) when they return to America East competition with a game at the University of Albany. The Terriers will put a 6-0-1 league record and a first-place standing in the conference on the line.
