B.U. Women's Soccer Blanks Vermont, 4-0
October 28, 2001 | Women's Soccer
Sophomore midfielder Rebecca Beyer (Shawnee, KS) had her second five-point effort of the season, scoring two goals and assisting on another, to lead the Boston University women's soccer team to a 4-0 blanking of the University of Vermont in America East women's soccer action at B.U.'s Nickerson Field on Sunday (October 28th).
With the Terriers' 1-0 win over 25th-ranked Hartford on Friday (October 26th) and the 4-0 shutout today, B.U. now has sole possession of first place in the America East conference. The Terriers' (11-5-1, 9-0-1) conference win streak also continues, as they are 21-0-1 in their last 22 regular-season conference matches, with their last defeat as a 1-0 loss to Hartford on October 15, 1999.
Beyer scored her first goal of the game came at 13:51 on a breakaway as she took the pass from junior midfielder Suzanne Hudak (Harleysville, PA). Beyer, who scored two goals and had an assist in the Terriers' 4-0 win over Albany last Sunday (October 21st), now leads B.U. with seven goals and 18 points this season.
"She's a tenacious, composed player who knows how to finish," said Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman of Beyer. "She had a slow start to the season but now she is really finding her groove."
With three minutes remaining in the first half, senior midfielder Teresa Petruccelli (Flushing, NY) assisted Beyer off an indirect penalty kick to put the Terriers up 2-0 at 41:34..
Beyer found senior forward Nicole Soules (Springfield, VA) for the third score of the game at 49:54. It was Soules's fifth goal of the season and her first goal in eight games.
"We knew that if we could keep her (Soules) on the field healthy, it was only a matter of time for her to score again," said Feldman.
Senior midfielder Stephanie Carlin (Burlington, MA) scored her first career goal off a rebound from Emily Dionne (Rockland, MA) for the Terriers' final score at 68:33.
"It was a storybook ending for her career," said Feldman of Carlin's goal. "She's the one always doing the cheering, and it was great to have people appreciate and respect her abilities."
Sophomore starting goalkeeper Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY) and senior goalkeeper Danielle Demers (Portland, ME) combined for the Terriers' third straight shutout, each making a save for the win.
The Terriers out shot the Catamounts, 28-5, allowing just one shot in the first half coming 23 minutes into the game. B.U. also kept Vermont's Kelly Herrero quiet, not allowing a single shot from the Catamounts' leading scorer. Vermont had been 5-1 when Herrero scored a goal this season going into the game.
"Our backs and goalkeepers played confidently and strong," said Feldman. "They were disciplined and smart, and put the fires out before they could become threatening. And our midfield was defensively strong, which was also the difference in the Hartford game."
Today was the final regular-season home game for seven Terrier seniors, who have accumulated a 50-28-3 overall record and a 33-2-2 conference record while at B.U., and contributed with two goals and an assist along with a save in the win over the Catamounts today.
