Terriers Renew Rivarly Against Boston College
November 18, 2001 | Men's Basketball
TONIGHT'S GAME Boston University and Boston College renew a rivalry that has lay dormant for 21 seasons. For B. U., the game is its third of the season. BC has yet to play a regular season game. The Eagles lead the all-time series, 34-17, and have won the last four meetings dating back to the 1974-75 season.
LAST GAME #8 Iowa 90, B.U. 61, on 11/14/01 at Iowa City, Iowa B. U. raced out to an 8-0 lead just 1:31 into the game as Matt Turner scored 17 points in the first 10:26 of the opening half. The Terriers led for the majority of the half, but trailed, 30-24, at the intermission. B. U. would rally in the opening minutes of the second half, taking a 45-44 lead on an alley-oop from Billy Collins to Turner with 16:39 left. Iowa's superior size and strength took over from there, as the No. 8 Hawkeyes outscored the Terriers, 46-16, the rest of the way. Luke Recker led the Iowa attack with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Collins also grabbed 10 boards, and true freshman Chaz Carr scored 15 points in only his second game.
TEAM NOTES · Matt Turner was on fire for stretches of both games this week. Against New Orleans, Turner scored 14 of the Terriers first 16 points in 7:23 of the second half. The next night, against Iowa, Turner netted 17 points in 10:26 to start the game. The junior guard tallied 31 points in 17:49 of playing time during that span. Turner has shot 13-for-27 from the field (48.1 percent) and 8- for-18 (44.4 percent) from the three-point line in the Terriers' first two games.
· Billy Collins is leading the Terriers in rebounding and assists, as well as three-point FG percentage. Through B. U.'s first two games, he is averaging 8.0 rpg, 4.0 apg, and is shooting 3-of-6 from behind the three-point line, good for 50.0 percent.
· Chaz Carr hasn't played like a true freshman, even in the hostile environment of Carver Hawkeye Arena against Iowa last Wednesday. The Manchester, CT, native scored 15 points against the Hawkeyes, and has done a good job handling the ball in the first two games.
· Paul Seymour has struggled shooting the ball in the first two games, hitting just 3-of-16 shots for 18.8 percent. He has made 1- of-10 three-pointers.
· Jason Grochowalski is the only other Terrier other than Turner to score in double figures in the first two games. He scored a team-high 18 points against UNO, then had 10 against Iowa.
· Two Terrier freshmen, 6-9 center Matt Czaplinski (Stratford, CT/Bunnell) and 6-0 guard David Traster (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills), will redshirt the 2001-02 season.

The Terriers, who earned five first-place votes and 77 overall points, were selected to the top spot after finishing last season with a 9-9 conference record and a 14-14 overall mark. Maine finished second in the preseason voting with the remaining four first-place votes and 76 points. Northeastern (59 points) edged Vermont (54) for third place. They were followed by Hartford (40) and New Hampshire (37). America East Conference newcomers Stony Brook (35), Albany (16), and Binghamton (11) rounded out the voting.
TURNER, GROCHOWALSKI NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM Junior guard Matt Turner and redshirt sophomore forward Jason Grochowalski were each named to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team. Last season, Turner proved to be a spark plug for the Terriers, breaking tight games open with his ability to put points on the board quickly. Grochowalski was the team's most reliable scoring threat, leading the team in scoring while earning conference All-Rookie Team honors.
GAME NO. 1: B. U. 69, UNO 63, on 11/13/01 at Iowa City, Iowa Red shirt sophomore forward Jason Grochowalski scored a team-high 18 points, and junior guard Matt Turner tallied all 14 of his points in the second half, leading B. U. to a 69-63 victory over New Orleans in the first round of the Guardians Classic at Carver Hawkeye Arena. New Orleans (0-1) steadily built an eight-point lead in the first 15 minutes of the opening half, as sophomore guard Kyle Buggs scored 17 of his 20 points in the period. The Terriers were down by only six points at 30-24 at the intermission, despite shooting 27 percent from the field. Turner, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored 14 of the Terriers' first 16 points in the second, turning a five-point deficit into a two-point lead at 40-38 with 12:37 left in the game. The Privateers pulled even with 2:34 remaining on a Buggs' three-pointer, but Grochowalski provided an immediate answer with a three-pointer of his own on the next possession as the Terriers once again built their lead to seven points with just 22 second left.
WOLFF BECOMES ALL-TIME LEADER IN COACHING WINS AT B. U. With a 69-42 victory over Hartford on Jan. 22, 2001, Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff became Boston University's all-time leader in coaching wins when he earned victory number 102. Wolff passed Mike Jarvis, now the head coach at St. John's, who was 101-51 in five seasons at B. U. Entering the 2001-02 season Wolff has an overall mark of 108-98 (.524).
B. U. WINS ITS ONLY EXHIBITION, 77-67 The Terriers opened and closed its exhibition season with a 77-67 victory over One on One at "The Roof" on Friday, Nov. 9. B. U. was paced by Billy Collins' 13-point effort. He was joined in double figures by Matt Turner (12 points), and Jason Grochowalski and Ryan Butt (11 points each). The game was tight heading into the second half, but B. U. pulled away thanks to a 17-3 run midway through the half, and led by as many as 23 points on a dunk from freshman Rashad Bell.

Paul Seymour and Matt Turner, with 54 and 52 three-pointers made, respectively, rank ninth and 10th on B. U.'s list of three-pointers in a season. Seymour, after only two years, enters the 2001-02 season ranked seventh all-time on the Terriers' career three-point list. He has made 124 three-pointers and is on a pace to shatter the all-time record of 202 career three-pointers made, set by Mark Daly from 1988-92. The Terriers also set a team record for three-pointers in a game with 13 in a 96-59 win over Towson on Feb. 8. B. In 12 games before the injury, Collins scored 7.6 points and pulled down 4.8 rebounds per game.
