Turner Earns America East Player of the Week Award
November 26, 2001 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON - Junior guard Matt Turner (West Haven, CT) was selected as the America East Spalding Player of the Week after scoring 31 points in Boston University's 70-58 victory over St. Peter's on Nov. 25. Turner tied a Case Gymnasium record and tied his personal career high with seven three-pointers in the game.
After B. U. went without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes in the opening half against the Peacocks, Turner broke the drought by scoring 13 points in a 19-5 run to end the half and tie the score at 27-27. He hit a three-pointer just 27 seconds into the second half to give the Terriers their first lead of the game at 30-27.
At the 14:02 mark, sophomore guard Kevin Fitzgerald fed Turner with an alley-oop pass that Turner dunked to give B. U. its largest lead of the game at 41-34. In the second half Turner went 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from the three-point line. He also added three assists, one blocked shot, one steal, and one rebound.
The seven three-pointers tied the Case Gymnasium record that Turner originally tied last season in a 96-59 win over Towson on Feb. 8.
The Player of the Week selection was the first for a B. U. player in four seasons. The last Terrier to be honored was Billy Beal on Jan 18, 1998.
The Terriers return to action when they travel to Washington, D. C. to face Atlantic-10 foe George Washington on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Game time at the Charles E. Smith Center is 7:30 p.m.
