December 8, 2001 | Men's Basketball
In the first 7:45 of the game Duerksen made three three-pointers and Austin made two, as the Lions went on a 9-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. Freshman guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, CT) hit a jumper from the left side to end the Columbia streak, and freshman forward Rashad Bell followed with two free throws. Junior forward Billy Collins (Concord, NH) then hit a short jumper to cut the Lions' lead to two points at 17-15 with 9:51 left in the half. It was as close as the Terriers would get the rest of the way.
Duerksen and Austin hit back-to-back threes to extend the lead back to eight points, and Austin added a baseline jumper to push the lead to 10 points at 25-15. Duerksen's three-pointer with 1:40 left in the half gave Columbia its largest lead of the half at 32-17. The Lions went into the half leading 32-19.
Duerksen connected on 5-of-8 three-pointers in the half, finishing with 15 points. Austin was also in double figures, going 3-for-4 from behind the three-point line. He had 11 points. The Terriers were led by Collins, who had seven points.
In stark contrast to the first half, when the two teams combined for only five personal fouls, the opening of the second half saw numerous fouls. The Terriers, who were called for only one personal in the first half - a reaching foul by Collins with 12 seconds remaining in the half - were called for five fouls in the first 2:36.
Sophomore forward Ryan Butt (Lancaster, PA) made a top-of-the-key three-pointer two minutes into the half to cut the lead to 35-24. Columbia immediately went on a 10-0 run over the next 2:26 to take a 45-24 advantage.
The Terriers committed their 10th team foul with 6:18 left, and the Lions, who didn't attempt a free throw in the first half,, made 13 of 15 of their free throw attempts down the stretch.
Columbia (6-2) was led in scoring by Duerksen's 18 points. Austin added 16 points and seven rebounds, and senior Joe Case had 14 points and seven rebounds. The Lions made 11-of-28 three-pointers. They were 11-of-25 from inside the arc. The Terriers were 5-of-10 from the three-point line - both season lows - and 12-of-17 from the free throw line.
B. U. was led in scoring by Collins, who finished with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Carr was the only other double-figure scorer with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
