Lopez Leads Terriers At America East Meet

Sophomore Karissa Lopez (Santa Fe, NM) set two team and one America East Conference record and was the third-highest point producer at the Conference’s annual Swimming and Diving Championships that were held February 16-18 at the University of Maine.
Lopez set both a conference and B.U. team record in winning the 200 fly in 2:04.44, while she established a school record in the 400 individual medley when she finished second in the event in 4:32.97.
Unfortunately, her efforts weren’t enough as the Terriers finished fifth with 455 points. Northeastern won the team title with 706 points. Delaware was a distant second with 550, followed, in order, by New Hampshire, 511; Towson, 473; BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 455; Maine, 423; Drexel, 264; and Vermont, 123.
"It was really a disappointing season for us," said head coach Reagh Wetmore. "We had hoped to do better during the regular-season and at the conference meet."
"What hurt us, though, were illness and injuries," the coach said. "We had four swimmers either who could not compete during the entire season or were limited during the year."
Ironically, Lopez was one of the swimmers who was limited during the season.
"She was suffering from a tendon injury to her shoulder," said Wetmore. "It was amazing she did so well at the conference meet."
Other individual point scorers at the America East meet were senior Kerry Kusz (Iron Mountain, MI), who was third in the 100 freestyle in:53.23; freshman Kelli Sweeting (Sarasota, FL), who was third in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.84; and freshman diver Stacey Gallacher (Horseheads, NY), who was third in both the one- and three-meter dives.
Finally, the 400 medley relay team of Sweeting, Lopez, Kusz, and junior Christina Chen (Tacoma, WA) placed fourth in 3:58.25.
