Grochowalski Earns Terriers' MVP honor at Annual Awards Banquet

Boston - Redshirt freshman forward Jason Grochowalski (Shrewsbury, Mass.) earned Boston University basketball's Lou Cohen Most Valuable Player honor and freshman guard Kevin Fitzgerald (Belle Harbor, N. Y.) captured the Defensive Player of the Year honor at the Terriers' annual awards banquet on Saturday, April 28, 2001.
Grochowalski led the team in scoring (12.7 points per game), three-point field goal percentage (41.3 percent) and free-throw percentage (86.0 percent). He scored in double-figures in 18 games during the 2000-01 season. Fitzgerald was frequently used as the "stopper" for the opposing teams' best offensive player. He registered a team-high 48 steals, and was second on the team with eight blocked shots.
Junior forward Jerome Graham (North Minneapolis, Minn.) was voted the team's Most Improved Player. This season Graham led the team in field goal percentage (50.0 percent), after shooting only 41.1 percent the previous season.
Junior guard Mark Michalek (Englewood, Colo.) earned the Reggie Stewart Award, given annually to the player who exemplifies the spirit, dedication and commitment to the Boston University basketball program that Stewart had during his time at B. U. Upon graduation in 1991, Stewart enrolled in B. U.'s School of Law, and, midway through his second year, died unexpectedly from a heart attack.
Fitzgerald and freshman forward Ryan Butt (Lancaster, Pa.) shared the Rookie of the Year award. Junior forward Stijn Dhondt (Borem, Belgium) earned the "Friends of Basketball" award, given by B. U.'s Friends of Basketball group, recognizing the player whose accomplishments were most overlooked during the season.
Boston University finished the 2000-01 season with a 14-14 mark, falling to the University of Maine in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament after nearly overcoming a 10-point deficit in the last two minutes.
