Krisha Zagura fired a shot into the goal less than 10 minutes into the game and the Stony Brook women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 win over Boston University on Friday night (Oct. 11) at Nickerson Field.
For the Terriers (4-8-1, 1-2-1), it marked their first America East regular-season home loss in 27 games. Before tonight, B.U.'s most recent regular-season conference loss was to Hartford in a 1-0 decision on October 15, 1999.
The Seawolves (3-8-2, 1-1-1) tallied the game's only goal when Beth Ariklan sent a direct kick from 30 feet out into the box and Zagura slammed home a shot from a step in front of the goal line at 9:07 in the first half. With the ball delivered above her out-stretched arms, Terrier junior goalkeeper Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY) had no play on the ball.
Stony Brook nearly put away its second goal of the game in the 30th minute of play as Jennifer Fontanetta beat a defender and forced Clinton to commit to the ball. Fontanetta fired a shot to the right of Clinton but junior back Emily Dionne (Rockland, MA) made a sliding kick save to clear the ball out of the box.
The Terriers out shot the Seawolves, 5-4, in the first half, but could not convert on any scoring opportunities.
B.U. put more offensive pressure on the Stony Brook defense in the second half, as senior midfielders Suzanne Hudak (Harleysville, PA) and Allison Merkle (Baltimore, MD) combined for six second-half shots.
With less than four remaining, the Terriers had their final scoring chance, as freshman forward Meghann Cook (Melrose, MA) lifted a cross from the left sideline to junior forward Katie Smurthwaite (West Hartford, CT). Off a header from Smurthwaite, a wide-open Rebecca Beyer (Kansas City, MO) took a point-blank shot on goal. The junior midfielder's shot sailed high over the cross bar.
Cindy Bennett earned the win for the Seawolves, making five saves. Clinton finished the game with six stops.
Up next, the Terriers host Harvard on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Nickerson Field.
