October 7, 2002 | Men's Soccer

BOSTON - Senior goalkeeper Matt Smith (Lanchester, England), who led the Terriers to a 2-1 upset win over #12 San Diego and a 3-0 shutout of Binghamton last weekend, was named the America East Co-Player of the Week.
In addition, freshman midfielder Jamie Johnson (Brisbane, Australia) was named Rookie of the Week.
Smith made a career-high 13 saves in the win over San Diego on Oct. 4. It marked the second time this season the Terriers (6-3-1, 1-0-0) had defeated a nationally ranked opponent. The Terriers defeated then-seventh-ranked Connecticut, 1-0, on Sept. 17.
Two days later, he earned his fourth shutout of the season against conference-foe Binghamton.
Through 10 games, Smith leads the conference in all goalkeeping statistical categories, including goals against average (1.08), save percentage (.867), total saves (72), and shutouts (four).
In addition to the league honor, Smith was named the College Soccer News.com National Team of the week. This was the second time this season Smith was honored by the America East.
Johnson had a goal and an assist in the Terriers' two wins last week. Johnson assisted on junior back Karl Ruegemer's (Minnetonka, MN) goal against San Diego and scored his second goal of the season against Binghamton. Johnson has been a constant in the Terrier midfield, starting all 10 games. He leads all Terrier freshmen and ranks fourth on the team in scoring with five points off two goals and an assist.
Johnson became the second Terrier to earn the Rookie of the Week honor. Midfielder Sedrick Chin (St. Mary's, Jamaica) received the award on Sept. 9.
Boston University will look to remain undefeated in the America East when it plays the University of Maine on Wednesday (Oct. 9). Game time is 3 p.m. in Orono.
