October 14, 2003 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON - Four Boston University men's basketball seniors have been named as team captains, as announced by head coach Dennis Wolff. The foursome, forward Ryan Butt (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield), guard Kevin Fitzgerald (Belle Harbor, N. Y. / St. Francis Prep), forward Jason Grochowalski (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Worcester Academy), and guard Matt Turner (West Haven, Conn. / St. Thomas More) will guide the Terriers into the 2003-04 basketball season.
Butt, an America East All-Conference Third Team selection as a junior last season, was fifth on the team in scoring and third in rebounding after averaging 8.0 points and 4.9 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 forward has been remarkably consistent, averaging 9.0, 8.1, and 8.0 points per game, and 5.2, 4.8, and 4.9 rebounds per game in his first three years at B. U.
Last year, Fitzgerald finished third in America East in assist-to-turnover ratio. He had 79 assists, which tied him with junior guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, Conn. / Manchester) for the team lead, while committing only 42 turnovers. He enters the 2003-04 season 10th in career assists at B. U. with 286.
Grochowalski will be looked to for additional scoring and rebounding in 2003-04. The 6-foot-6 forward finished last year fourth on the team in scoring and rebounding after averaging 8.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
After missing most of 2001-02 with a shoulder injury, Turner returned last year to reprise his roll as the team's offensive spark plug. Third on the team in scoring at 8.7 points per game, Turner had a number of impressive performances, including his role in the Terriers' win over the ACC's Florida State, when her scored all of his game-high 18 points in the final 12:29, sparking the Terriers to an 84-69 victory.
Fitzgerald and Turner, along with Billy Collins, who graduated in May 2003 with a degree in History, served as team captains last year.
The Terriers will go for an unprecedented third straight 20+ win season, starting with their 2003-04 season-opener at Holy Cross on Nov. 22 at 5 p.m.
