Terriers, UNH End Meet With Rarity-A 150-150 Tie
November 1, 2003 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOSTON, Mass-Trailing by what seemed to be an insurmountable deficit of 31 points early in the meet, the Terrier women's swimming and diving team came roaring back to win five straight events against the University of New Hampshire in a meet that ended in a rarity-a 150-150 tie.
"In my 31 years of coaching here, I think we have had just one other tie," said veteran coach Reagh Wetmore.
The performances of the three divers-seniors Stacey Gallacher (Horseheads, NY) and Kristin Stratton (Aurora, CO) and freshman Megan White (Falmouth, ME) were critical to the Terriers' come-from-behind win. Gallacher, who has established herself as one of the premier divers in America East over the last three years, won both the one- and three-meter events against the Wildcats. She scored 256.50 points at one meter and 255.30 at three meters. Stratton and White finished second and third, respectively, in the two events to lead a 1-2-3 B.U. sweep. Sophomore Lidija Breznikar (Kotpje, Slovenia) won three events, including the 200-yard breaststroke in a school record-breaking 2:21.27. She also won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.09 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.08.. Sophomore Meagan Breiland (Mesa, AZ) placed first in two events-the 50-yard freestyle in :25.13 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in :54.11 seconds.
Junior Courtlandt McKinlay (Cheshire, CT) led the field in the 100-yard breaststroke race with a time of 1 minute, 11.30 seconds. Contributing second-place efforts were sophomore Natalie Boyd (Pittsburgh, PA) in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.4, senior Kelli Sweeting (Sarasota, FL) in the 200-yard backstroke in 2 :11.20 seconds, and freshman Tanaz Irani (Orlando, FL) in the 100-yard butterfly, who was clocked at 1:00.67 seconds. Freshman Marina Morie (Honolulu, HI) finished right behind Irani in 1:01.60 seconds, and she was followed by junior Emily Moreno (Oakland, NJ) at 1:01.67 seconds. Morie and Moreno placed third and fourth in that event, respectively.
