Terriers Turned Back By No. 13 Saint Joseph's
November 25, 2003 | Men's Basketball
Junior guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, Conn.) added 13 points, making 3-of-6 three-pointers, and junior forward Rashad Bell (Queens, N. Y.) had nine points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Terriers. Saint Joseph's senior All-American Jameer Nelson had 13 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and five steals. It was junior Delonte West who led the Hawks in scoring with 20 points.
The game was played in front of 1,669 fans on "The Roof", one of the largest regular-season men's basketball crowds in recent memory.
A Tyrone Barley three-pointer with nine minutes left in the first half gave Saint Joseph's (2-0) a 22-11 lead. The Terriers, behind Butt's 14 first-half points, battled back, going on an 11-2 run, eight points of which came from Butt, to cut the lead to 24-22 with four minutes to go in the half.
Just as quickly, however, the Hawks put together a 13-0 run which included three-pointers by Barley and Pat Carroll to take a 37-24 lead into the intermission. The Hawks hit 8-of-16 three-pointers in the first half.
The Saint Joseph's lead ballooned to 20 points at 52-32 with 12:25 remaining in the game, but freshman guard Pat Martin (Springfield, Mass.) scored five quick points, the first of his career, on a jumper and a three-pointer to quickly trim the lead to 52-39. Martin then assisted on a Bell layup to further cut into the lead, but a pair of Carroll free throws and a three-pointer just as quickly pushed the SJU lead to 57-41 with 8:48 to go.
B. U. (0-2) threatened one last time, as a three-pointer by senior guard Matt Turner (West Haven, Conn.) again cut the lead to 11 points with 6:37 left, but the Terriers couldn't get any closer in the final minutes.
"I was pretty satisfied by the effort we got out of our group," said Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff. "I didn't feel like at any point we gave in. We kept trying to make plays."
Overall, Saint Joseph's hit 12-of-29 three-pointers. The Terriers outrebounded the bigger Hawks, however, 38-28. For the second straight game, the turnover bug plagued the Terriers, as they had 20 turnovers.
In addition to Butt's 20-point effort, he contributed five rebounds and two assists, making 8-of-15 shots, all the while playing most of the second half with a broken nose, suffered when he was hit in the face by an errant elbow.
The Terriers play their third straight game against a team that made a post-season appearance last year when they travel up Comm Ave to face Green Line rival Boston College on Saturday, Nov. 29. Game time at the Eagles' Conte Forum is 1:30 p.m.
