Bell, Carr Lead Terriers In Double Overtime Win At Ohio
December 3, 2003 | Men's Basketball
B. U. (2-3) held a 36-26 lead with 11:10 left in the regulation, but Ohio went on a 16-6 run, a Thomas Stephens three-pointer tying the game at 42-42 with 3:42 remaining in the second half. Up 50-48 with less than a minute to play in the second half, Stephens tied the game once again at 50-50 with eight seconds on the clock with a clutch right-wing jumper to send the game into overtime.
A left-baseline jumper by senior guard Matt Turner (West Haven, Conn.) and a Bell offensive rebound and layup gave the Terriers a quick 54-50 advantage 1:08 into the first overtime. Another Bell offensive board led to a Bobcat foul and the two Bell free throws pushed the B. U. lead to seven points with 2:19 to play in the first overtime.
Ohio (1-4) wasn't through, however, as a Sonny Troutman traditional three-point play, followed by Delvar Barrett's 1-for-2 trip to the line cut the lead to 59-56, setting the stage another Ohio player to tie the game in the final seconds. Jeff Halbert provided the big shot this time, nailing a right-wing three-pointer with eight seconds on the clock to tie the score at 59-59. A last-second trey attempt fell short, sending the game into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Ohio quickly took a 61-59 lead - its first since losing a 12-11 advantage with 7:13 left in the first half - on a pair of Barrett free throws. B. U. took the lead for good with 2:33 remaining after sophomore guard Shaun Wynn (Brooklyn, N. Y.) grabbed an offensive rebound and Bell hit another big layup to make the score 62-61.
The Terriers sealed the victory as Carr and Bell each hit 1-of-2 free throws in the final 13 seconds.
"Considering the stretch of basketball games we've just played [three in five days], we played hard the entire time and were fortunate to win the game," said Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff.
Bell and Carr combined to go 16-for-32 from the field. As a team, B. U. shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58). After shooting just 25 percent (5-for-20) in the first half, Ohio managed to shoot 34.8 percent (16-for-46) for the game. The Bobcats committed 24 turnovers, compared to 15 for B. U.
Ohio had four players score in double figures, led by Barrett's 14-point effort.
Despite going 0-for-8 from the field, Wynn had strong contributions with six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
It was the first double-overtime game for B. U. since an 88-85 loss at the University of Vermont on Jan. 23, 2000 and the first double-overtime victory for the Terriers since a 57-54 win at Colgate on Jan. 8, 1985.
After playing three games in five days, the Terriers have a six-day layoff before they host Harvard University on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Game time at Case Gym is 7 p.m.
