Breznikar's Streak Helps Propel Terriers Past URI

Sophomore Lidija Breznikar (Kotpje, Slovenia) placed first in three events and was part of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams as the Boston University women's swimming and diving team defeated URI, 213-80 on Saturday, January 31. Breznikar has not lost in 24 straight events in dual meet competition. It was the final dual meet of the season for the Terriers, who won four of their final five meets to even their record at 4-4-1.
Breznikar took first in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:08.84, nearly eight seconds faster than teammate Emily Moreno (Oakland, NJ), who finished second. She easily outdistanced the field in the 200 breast, finishing in a time of 2:23.01, 15 seconds better than URI's Liatte Krueger's second place finish. Breznikar also took first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:14.47.
Senior Stacey Gallacher (Horseheads, NY) paced the diving team, which placed 1-2-3 in both the one and three meter dives. Gallacher took first in each event, scoring a 265.0 on the three meter board and 273.15 on the one meter.
Junior Lauren Foster (Lake Quivira, KS) and senior Kelli Sweeting (Sarasota, FL) were also dual winners for the Terriers. Foster took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.03 as well as the 100 free in 54.64. Sweeting posted her best times of the year in winning both the 100 (1:00.77) and 200 (2:08.96) backstroke.
Sweeting also teamed with Breznikar, freshman Marina Morie (Honolulu, HI), and sophomore Meagan Breiland (Mesa, AZ) in the 200 medley relay, which the Terriers won in a time of 1:52.64.
The women are off until the weekend of Friday, February 22 when they compete in the America East Championships to be held at the University of Maine's Stanley M. Wallace pool. Trials begin at 11 am.
