August 4, 2003 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON - Mike Costello, a former Boston University men's basketball captain, has joined the Terriers' coaching staff, B. U. head coach Dennis Wolff announced today.
Costello will be involved in all B. U. basketball operations. He will assist in the Terriers' recruiting efforts, practice and game preparations, on-the-floor coaching, scheduling, compliance, academic advising, and counseling. In addition, he will help coordinate the team's annual off-the-court efforts, such as Wolff's "In the Air" summer basketball camps and the team's annual golf outing. Along with administrative assistant Chris McLaughlin, Costello will also coordinate the program's Friends Group.
Costello had a solid four-year career with B. U., averaging 7.4 points and 2.1 rebounds in 112 career games, playing mostly as a shooting guard and small forward. He helped the Terriers win America East regular-season championships during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. The 1996-97 team won the conference's tournament championship as well, posting a program-best 25-5 overall record and advancing to the NCAA tournament.
A team captain during his junior and senior seasons, Costello finished his career second on the Terriers' all-time three-pointers made list with 196. He holds the team's record for steals in a game with eight.
While working in the private sector in high-tech software sales for the last two years, Costello coached the Middlesex Magic, a 17-and-under AAU basketball team in nearby Belmont, Mass., to the 17-and-under AAU national championship tournament and the Adidas "Big Time" basketball tournament, one of the top AAU events in the country. He also assisted in the Eastern Invitational basketball camp in Trenton, N. J.
As a scholastic basketball player for Belmont High School, Costello helped lead the Marauders to four Middlesex County League titles and the Massachusetts State Championship in 1993 as a freshman.
Costello graduated from Boston University in 2000 with a degree in Sociology. He currently lives in his hometown of Belmont.
