Terriers Fall To Rhode Island, 3-1

BOSTON - In a battle of regional rivals, the University of Rhode Island men's soccer team defeated host-Boston University, 3-1, at Nickerson Field on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Jeffrey Gonsalves, Brian Mazza, and Perek Bellah each tallied goals for the Rams (4-5-0). Sophomore midfielder Sedrick Chin (St. Mary's Jamaica) scored the Terriers' (4-5-0) goal.
Midway through the first half, the Ram's Joe Spotford found Jeffrey Gonsalves open in the box. Gonsalves fired a shot into the lower right corner of the net for a score at 32:20.
After securing the 1-0 lead at halftime, the Rams looked to extend their lead early in the second period as Sasha Gotsmanov drilled a pass down the center of the field to Brian Mazza. Mazza collected the pass and sent the ball into the right corner for a goal at 46:41.
Perek Belleh pushed the lead to 3-0 when he scored off a penalty kick at 57:06.
Narrowing the deficit, senior midfielder Karl Ruegemer (Minnetonka, MN) took a shot and Chin collected the rebound at the side of the goal and scored at 70:01. The Terriers maintained pressure in the Rams defensive end but were unable to convert another goal.
Dean Ruddy made four saves while earning the win for the Rams.
Freshman goalkeeper Zach Riffett (Brenham, TX) made a game-high seven saves for the Terriers.
Rhode Island had a 14-11 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 difference in shots on goal. B.U. had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
On deck, the Terriers play at 13th-ranked Brown University on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7:00 p.m.
