Rebecca Beyer Receives Boston University's Scarlet Key
May 14, 2004 | Women's Soccer

Rebecca Beyer, who has combined an outstanding collegiate career for the Terrier women's soccer team along with a strong commitment to the University, has been presented Boston University's Scarlet Key Award.
The Award is presented to BU seniors who have exhibited exceptional leadership during their years at the University. Selection to Scarlet Key is based on excellence in University student activities and organizations, commitment and involvement to the individual's School or College, and scholarship.
Athletically, Beyer was a four-year starter for the Terrier women's soccer team. She finished her career with 16 goals and 9 assists for 41 points. Both her goal and point totals tied her for seventh on the University's all-time list.
A two-year co-captain, Beyer played on teams that had a combined record of 49-29-8. They won the America East title three times and advanced to the NCAAs each year. This past season, as Beyer scored four goals and added two assists, the Terriers compiled an overall record of 12-6-5 and a 7-1-2 conference record. In the NCAA Tournament, they lost, 1-0, in their first-round matchup against the University of Connecticut team that advanced to the NCAA Division 1 title game against the University of North Carolina.
When not involved with soccer, Beyer participated in community service activities both with her team and through the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. The activities included reading to school children, conducting soccer clinics, visiting the cancer unit at a local children's hospital, and contributing toward the purchase of Christmas gifts for underprivileged children.
In addition, she served as a writing tutor for the College of Arts and Sciences and was a columnist for the University's daily student newspaper, the Daily Free Press.
Even with all these activities, she was able to excel in the classroom. In fact, she graduated magna cum laude with a 3.54 grade point average. Twice nominated for College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America, she graduated last Sunday, May 16, with a 3.54 grade point average. She majored in sociology with minors in Spanish and journalism. This fall, she will be enrolled at New York University in a master's program in journalism.
