Wolff Named New England Division I Coach of The Year
August 31, 2004 | Men's Basketball
KINGSTON, R.I. - The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has named Boston University men's basketball head coach Dennis Wolff its New England Division I Men's Coach of the Year, adding to an already impressive list of accolades for the Terrier coach.
The award will be presented on September 24 at the Ryan Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island as part of the Hall of Fame Dinner / Induction Ceremony.
The award is another in a string of accolades for Wolff this year. In March, he earned District I Coach of the Year honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and, for the second straight season, was named America East's Men's Basketball Coach of the Year.
Wolff also received NABC District I, New England Division I, and America East Coach of the Year honors in 1997, following the Terriers' 25-5 NCAA Tournament season.
The Terriers are coming off a season in which they put up one of the program's best regular-season performances, going 23-4 and winning 23 of their last 24 games. Included in that total were a 12-game winning streak, one shy of the program's best-ever 13-game streak in 1996-97, and a 17-1 mark in conference play. The team also won its third-straight America East regular-season championship.
A disappointing post-season finish, in which they lost in the First Round of the America East Tournament, couldn't diminish the tremendous season the Terriers had in 2003-04. B.U. accepted its second straight NIT bid, going to the post-season for a team-record third straight year.
This season, Wolff enters his 11th season at B.U. He is the Terriers' all-time leader in career coaching wins, bringing a 172-123 (.583) into the season. He is 202-141 (.589) in 12 years as a head coach.
Former Terrier basketball player Billy Collins '03 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the ceremony in honor of his achievements during a sensational high school career at Bishop Brady in Concord, N.H.
B.U. opens the 2004-05 men's basketball campaign with a pair of home games against Holy Cross on Saturday, Nov. 20 (1 p.m.) and Fordham on Wednesday, Nov. 24 (2 p.m.)
