Terriers Dominate In Win Over Rhode Island, 1-0

BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team out-shot Rhode Island, 18-1, en route to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Rams at Nickerson Field on Friday, Sept. 24.
Junior forward Melissa Shulman (Huntington, NY) netted the game-winner for the Terriers, who improved to 7-1-1 on the season. The Rams fell to 4-5-0 with the loss.
The Terriers were unable to get on the scoreboard in the first half despite out-shooting the Rams, 8-1, in the first 45 minutes of play. Rhode Island goalkeeper Ria Carroll made five of her game-high nine saves in the first half to keep B.U. scoreless.
Junior back Susan Marschall (Baton Rouge, LA) sparked the Terriers scoring opportunity in the second half, sending a long feed into the attacking end in the 58th minute of play. Freshman forward Lauren Basham (Lake Oswego, OR) collected the ball and beat her defender on the left side. Basham slipped a pass to Shulman, who fired a shot into the right side of the net at 57:50. With the goal, Shulman upped her season total to four and her career total to 21, tying Stacy Schwartz ('99) for fifth-place on B.U.'s career goal scoring list.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, NY) made one save in the first half to earn the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Christina Reuter (Madison, WI) protected the shutout in the second half as she did not face a shot on goal in the period.
