November 1, 2005 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON ??? Despite losing its top three leading scorers from a team that went 20-9 and advanced to the NIT a year ago, the Boston University men???s basketball team was chosen to finish second in the America East Preseason Coaches??? Poll, released Tuesday morning. BU garnered 52 total points, including three first place votes, to finish behind Albany (61 points, 5 first place votes). Maine received the other first-place vote and was chosen third, with 46 points.
???We have a very young team this year,??? said Terrier head coach Dennis Wollf, who is 192-133 in 11 seasons at BU. ???By the time conference season rolls around we will have had the chance to develop and grow, and compete very strongly for the top of the league.???
Senior guard Shaun Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was chosen to the Preseason All-Conference team. Wynn averaged 6.2 ppg and 3.4 apg in 2004-05. He ranked second in the conference with a 2.27-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Wynn, a co-captain this season, was the 2003-04 America East Defensive Player of the Year.
BU is in the midst of its most successful stretch in school history. The Terriers have won 85 games in the last four years and have advanced to postseason play in each of those four seasons (3 NIT and one NCAA). The Terriers finished league play 14-4 in 2004-05, good for third place in the America East. BU opens its season in the preseason NIT against top-ranked Duke on Nov. 14, and the Terriers open at home against the University of Michigan on Nov. 22 at Agganis Arena. BU has beaten Michigan in each of the last two seasons.
