BOSTON- The Boston University women???s soccer team will take on the University of Connecticut Huskies Thursday in Storrs, Conn., in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers learned of their destination Monday evening in the nationally-televised Women???s Soccer Selection Show. Game time is at 6 p.m., followed by Dartmouth vs. Boston College, which will also be played in Storrs. Thursday's winners will meet Saturday at noon.
BU (13-4-4), which finished the year unbeaten in its last 11 games (9-0-2) and with just one loss in its last 16 (11-1-4), earned a rematch against the Huskies (15-4-2), who knocked them out of the NCAA Tournament in 2003. BU has now been to the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons: 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The Terriers earned an automatic berth into the field of 64 by defeating Maine 2-1 in double-overtime Saturday afternoon to win the America East Tournament. UConn, ranked 15th in the nation, lost to Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament championship game.
???We are very excited about playing UConn again,??? said Terrier senior captain Brittany McDonald (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). ???We have a lot of energy going in to [the Tournament] and I really think we are playing great. We are really on top of our game right now and it will only get better in the tournament.???
In BU???s latest NCAA Tournament appearance, the Terriers dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to UConn in a 2003 match played at Boston College. The Terriers lost to Rutgers in the first round in 2001. In 2000, they beat Holy Cross before bowing out to Dartmouth in the second round.
