Swimming and Diving Sweeps Maine

COMPLETE RESULTS


BOSTON - The BU men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in impressive performances in their final meet of the semester against Maine. The women beat the Black Bears 155-126 to improve to 3-3 on the season, while the men won 174-126 to improve to 2-3.

The women got things off to a strong start with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:51.77). Christina Ruggiero dominated the 1650-yard freestyle with a winning time of 17:50.48, and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.53). Lidija Breznikar was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.84), and the 200-yard IM (2:09.40). Alex Crerar and Megan White finished 1-2 in the one-meter diving (251.55, 242.03, respectively) and the three-meter diving event (272.10, 266.03, respectively). The Terriers also swept the top three places in the 50-yard freestyle, thanks to Natalie Boyd (25.40), Kila Englebrook (25.50) and Jennifer Liu (25.73). Additionally, Boyd was solid in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing second (1:56.95), just ahead of teammate Marina Morie (1:58.80). Irani Tanaz had a phenomenal swim in the 100-yard butterfly, winning the event in her best in-season time ever, with a sub-minute time of 59.99.

The men also started strong with a 200-yard medley relay victory in 1:37.76. Matt Watkins, battling the stomach flu, broke the five-minute barrier in the 500-yard free, and at 4:57.94, won the event by over 11 seconds. Greg Dierksen was consistent as usual, winning the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:54.45 and finsihingsecond in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.19). James Lands won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.85 and finished third in the 100-yard butterfly, (54.64), just behind teammate Griffin Moodie (54.52). Jonathan Melloul turned in personal bests in both the 100-yard backstroke (56.71, good for second) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.14, also second). Brian Lawler continued his dominance in the diving events, winning the one-meter event with 268.35 points and the three-meter dive with 319.95 points.

The men return to the water on Jan. 14 against Holy Cross, while the women swim again on Jan. 24 against Boston College.
