Men's Basketball Earns First Win, 72-63, Over Harvard
December 6, 2005 | Men's Basketball
âÂ?oeWe played as hard as we have in any of our games this season,âÂ?Â? said BU head coach Dennis Wolff, who earned the 193rd win of his career. âÂ?oeWe were very smart on offense. We had a good combination of inside and outside play which enabled us to get better shots.
Kevin Gardner was a big part of the inside success, as he scored a season-high 16 points, including 12 in the second half. Shaun Wynn continued his hot ways, scoring 12 points, including 3-3 from three-point range. Wynn is now 9-11 from beyond the arc in his last two games. Omari Peterkin had his finest game as a Terrier, tallying 12 points as well, including eight after intermission.
BU started quickly, as Hassan and Brian Macon canned threes in the first two minutes to give the Terriers a 6-0 lead. A Peterkin tip increased the bulge to nine, 18-9 at the 14:15 mark. Harvard was resilient, however, and the Crimson closed to within four, 25-22 on a Matt Stehle three-pointer. Wynn drained another three to give the Terriers a 28-22 edge, but Harvard scored eight straight points, and took its first lead of the game, 30-28, when Stehle hit all his free throws after being fouled while shooting a three-pointer. BU closed the half on a 9-2 run, however, on a three from Wynn and two strong hoops by Gardner, to take a 37-32 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Terriers steadily increased their advantage to 50-38 in the first six minutes of the second half, as Gardner was a force down low, scoring eight of BUâÂ?TMs first 11 points after intermission. The TerriersâÂ?TM lead would grow as large as 14, but a 10-4 HU run cut the deficit to just five, 64-59 with 4:20 remaining. Stehle failed to convert a free-throw which would have brought the Crimson closer, and Wynn found Ibrahim Konate open under the basket for a dunk on BUâÂ?TMs next possession to give the Terriers a 66-59 lead and essentially put the game out of reach.
BU continues its busy stretch of four games in seven days when the Terriers host New Hampshire in the America East opener for both teams. Game time is 7:05 p.m., on Thursday night at The Roof.
