Men's Basketball Hosts Rider At Case On Saturday
November 17, 2006 | Men's Basketball
The Terriers are coming off their first win of the season, a 78-74 decision over the Crimson. The Terriers hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 28 seconds of the game to seal the win. Red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris led the team with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting and five assists. Four other Terriers - freshman Corey Lowe (14 pts), freshman Carlos Strong (13 pts) and senior Omari Peterkin (11 pts) - all scored in double figures in the win. It was BU's sixth straight victory over Harvard.
For the second straight game, BU's bench has made major contributions to the team's efforts. After chipping in 25 points against GW on Nov. 10, the Terrier bench out-scored the Crimson reserves 30-14 on Tuesday night. Seniors Peterkin and Brian Macon combined for 17 points and Strong added 13. Against GW, Strong led BU with 19 off the bench, and Peterkin tallied six points.
Rider opened its season with a 62-53 loss to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Rider led 12-11 with just 7:48 left in the first half, and the score was tied at 21-21 at halftime, as both teams shot less than 35 percent in the first 20 minutes. NJIT out-rebounded Rider 48-34. Harris Mansell and Terrance Mouton paced the Broncs with 13 points apiece. Jason Thompson tallied a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
The rivalry between the Terriers and Rider is fairly new, with the Broncs holding a slight 2-1 edge in wins. The teams' first meeting was on Nov. 25, 1994 when BU defeated Rider 80-78 in the Terriers' home opener. Rider has won the last two games played by a combined total of nine points. The Broncs claimed victory on Nov. 25, 2005 (64-62) and Nov. 26, 2005 (71-64).
In the last meeting between the two teams, Rider pulled out a 71-64 win on Nov. 26, 2005 in Lawrenceville, N.J. Rider opened the game hitting a pair of 3-pointers to take a 6-0 lead less than two minutes in. The Broncs hit four of their first six shots in the early going, while BU was just 2-for-7 from the field to dig an early hole. A BU two brought the Terriers to within three, 10-7; however, Rider proceeded to go on a 12-4 run to jump out to a 22-11 lead. Bronc guard Harris Mansell hit a three to spark the run and added a pair of free throws when Terrier forward Ibrahim Konate was whistled for a technical foul after hanging on the rim.
BU responded quickly, burying a pair of 3-pointers less than 30 seconds apart to cut the deficit to five, 22-17. BU would go on a drought which would see it score just two more buckets in the nine minutes following the treys. Rider went on a 15-4 run led by six points from Jason Thompson and 3-pointers by Kamron Warner and Edwin Muniz to take its largest lead of the half, 37-21, with under a minute remaining. Brian Macon hit a three with 26 seconds left, but Terrance Mouton dropped in a runner in the paint to give the Broncs a 39-24 halftime advantage. BU, which trailed by as many as 20 in the second half, went on a spirited 15-2 run to cut the deficit to five, 64-59, with 1:55 remaining in the game. BU hit three 3-pointers to key the spurt, and Macon added a pair of hoops as well. However the Terriers could not quite get over the hump as they committed a pair of turnovers down the stretch, and Rider hit 7-of-11 free throws to salt away the win.
The Terriers hit the road for the next four games, starting with cross-town rival Northeastern on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. Note: The game time for Northeastern has changed from 7:30 to 7 p.m.
