Northeastern Hands Men's Basketball 73-54 Loss
November 21, 2006 | Men's Basketball
Senior Omari Peterkin (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) led the Terriers with his first career double double - 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. He was 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from the floor and pulled down nine offensive boards. Freshman Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) and red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) each scored in double figures, with ten and 14 points, respectively. The Huskies had four players in double figures, led by Adrian Martinez's 21 points. Bennet Davis recorded a double double of 20 points and ten rebounds.
BU got off to a slow start, as Northeastern scored the first 12 points of the game and took a 15-2 lead at 16:20 spurred by three 3-pointers by Bobby Kelly, Matt Janning and Manny Adako. The Huskies pushed that lead to 21-13 at 10:31 after eight straight points from Davis. Kelly added to NU's lead with a two at 9:25 and then two consecutive threes to give the Huskies a 31-19 advantage at 7:50.
The pace of the game slowed over the next three minutes, with Northeastern continuing to hold a double-digit lead, 34-22, at 4:04. The Terriers had trouble generating offense at the end of the first half, scoring just three field goals in the final eight minutes. Lowe hit two of those, a pair of threes, in the final minute to get BU within 11, 43-32, but Martinez coolly made a three from 20 feet as the buzzer sounded to put the Huskies up 46-32 at the break.
BU scored the first points of the second half on a well-executed inbounds play that led to a dunk by sophomore Ibrahim Konate (Bamako, Mali), 46-34. Adako hit a three at 15:58 but Peterkin scored two consecutive baskets, the first on a tip off a Terrier miss and the second off a post move down low to make the score 49-38 at 15:46 and start a 12-3 BU rally. The Terriers seemed to settle into a rhythm that was lacking in the first half and used that run to chip away at the Husky lead. Morris sunk a pair of free throws at 14:51 during the rally and followed those with a jumper in traffic in the lane at 13:55 to get BU within seven, 49-42.
Peterkin dropped in a lay up at 13:05 that got the Terriers within five, the closest margin of the game, but Martinez made a 3-pointer to snap the scoring run. The Huskies never let the Terriers any closer for the rest of the way, extending their lead to as many as 22 in the final two minutes of play.
BU out-rebounded Northeastern 36-23. The Terriers also dominated the paint, out-scoring the Huskies 20-12 there. Peterkin helped BU win more second chance points than Northeastern (11-5) with several putbacks off Terrier misses, and the senior also aided the BU bench in out-scoring NU reserves 19-1.
The Terriers travel to Riverdale, N.Y. seeking a win against Manhattan College on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
