One of the three players from California is April Setterlund. A native of Torrance, Calif., Setterland was a three-year starter at South Torrance High School where she was a First Team All-Bay League selection in 2005 and 2006. Setterlund is also a member of the Mizzuno Pride, which played in the 2006 ASA Gold Nationals. During the summer of 2006, she hit .489, stole 58 bases and scored 62 runs in 48 games. The outfielder recorded a .535 on base percentage and hit four home runs as the lead off hitter.
“April was highly recruited athlete with almost 50 offers to play softball,” said Rychcik. “She is a five-tool athlete that will have an immediate impact on our program. She has great speed in the outfield and should have a tremendous career here at BU.”
Hailing from Santa Rosa, Calif., Caitlin Rentler is a versatile athlete who can fill in at third base, catcher or in the outfield. Rentler is a three-year letter winner at La Reina High School and was named to the Tri-Valley First Team in 2005 and 2006. She was the Outstanding Defensive Player in 2005 and 2006 and hit .324 with 27 RBIs.
Rentler plays for the So Cal Diamonds, managed by Paul Garziano, and qualified for the ASA Gold National in 2006 and 2005, placing as high as ninth place. A member of the National Honor Society, Rentler intends to major in Physical Therapy.
“Caitlin will bring depth to our catching position and give us another big bat in the line up,” said Rychcik. “She has the ability to play several positions on the field which will add to the overall depth of our team.”
Melanie Delgado of Torrance, Calif., is a two-year letter winner at Bishop Montgomery High School and earned First Team CIF accolades in 2006 and 2005. The third baseman was the MVP in both of those seasons as well as the recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award. Delgado played with fellow BU signee April Setterland on the Mizzuno Pride in the 2006 ASA Gold National Tournament. Her summer travel softball team is Philly’s Gold managed by Pat Kelly. Delgado is intending on majoring in International Relations at BU. Also an accomplished student, she was placed on the principal’s honor roll from 2004-06.
“Melanie is a very versatile athlete that can play several positions,” said Rychcik. “She has a very good bat and will be a middle of the line up hitter here at BU. On defense she will have an opportunity at third base but could see time at other infield positions due to her athleticism.”
Kelley Engmann, of Vienna, Va., attends Bishop O’Connell High School and is the 2006 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. The pitcher was a 2006 NFCA Second Team All-America honoree, as well as a two-time First Team All-State selection. Engmann has won three consecutive Virginia Independent Schools State Championships. She was 24-0 in 2006 with a 0.48 ERA. She won 43 consecutive games, spanning the 2005-06 seasons. In the summertime Engmann plays for the Virginia Shamrocks, coached by Tommy Orndorff. The Shamrocks finished fifth at ASA Gold Nationals.
A member of the National Honor Society, Engmann plans to major in Marine Biology at BU.
“Kelley has been a part of winning teams her whole career,” said Rychcik. “She comes from an outstanding travel ball organization and is a proven winner. She will add depth to our pitching staff and hopefully bring her winning ways to our program.”
